When youre creating or editing a long document youll probably have to create a table of contents. Now youll see a little window with a list of styles.

In Word 2003 and before youll find it under Insert Reference Index and Tables Table of Contents. To show or hide the subheadings under a heading click the arrow next to the heading. To do that go the top of your current first page and then click on Insert and Blank Page.

On the References Ribbon in the Table of Contents Group click on the arrow next to the Table of Contents icon and select Insert Table of Contents. On the Mac go to back to the Insert menu and choose Index and Tables. Before starting it might be a good idea to add a blank page at the beginning of your document.

Once your Word document is properly formatted with the Heading Styles to make your Table of Contents simply. You want the left one. Select the text that we want to appear in the Table of Contents.

You can then click on the far left icon in the panel to display the TOC or browse the headings. Once selected apply the new style using the icon for the new style in the Styles section of the Home Ribbon. Adjust your general preferences.
